@Media 2007 Day Two
Joe Clark gave a controversial talk about things that we as web developers (in his opinion) shouldn’t be concerned about including font re-sizing and link text being used out of context. I can see where he is coming from, and even partly agree but it also seems a bit glib to just dismiss issues as ‘not my problem’. Pixels may be defined as a relative unit but are not implemented as such by IE - this may not mean much to screen reader or those using screen magnifier but there are other people, such as the elderly, who need to alter the size of text on a page.
I also enjoyed Cameron Moll’s Designing for Communication which was very clearly and beautifully presented. I’ve always believed design is about communication but Cameron talked about ‘Meaningful communication’ which makes much more sense.
I had been really looking forward to Andy Clarke’s presentation Royale with Cheese but, although it was interesting, it didn’t really seem to go anywhere and didn’t blow me away like his inspirational talk last year.
Altogether this was another great conference, giving me plenty to chew over afterwards. I also got meet lots of great people, eat some delicious food and have a brief tour around a fantastic city.

Well, yes, but my point is the px unit almost never comes up in text sizing because very few lines of text absolutely must be n pixels high. The people who really get this wrong are really getting a lot of other things wrong, too.
